Restoring the Past. Reconnecting Families. Reclaiming Dignity.
At Historical Equity, we are committed to uncovering and preserving the forgotten stories of African American communities by identifying cemeteries, documenting burial sites, and connecting descendants to their ancestral roots. Our work bridges the gap between lost histories and future generations.
For too long, the histories of Black and Brown families have been overlooked or erased due to systemic racism, poor record-keeping, and cultural neglect. Cemeteries lie unmarked. Names go undocumented. Legacies are scattered across incomplete archives. We exist to change that.
Through volunteer-powered research, grassroots documentation, and community partnerships, we locate and map African American cemeteries, digitize headstones, and support genealogical research that reconnects families with their lineage. Whether through cemetery photography, transcribing records, or archival research, every contribution helps rewrite the narrative of American history.
What makes us different?
We center dignity, inclusion, and access in everything we do. Our approach is collaborative—empowering everyday people, especially descendants, to preserve their own history while welcoming allies to help shoulder the work.
Who do we serve?
Historical Equity is a resource for everyone—genealogists, researchers, volunteers, and anyone passionate about preserving history—but our primary focus is on supporting and restoring African American cemeteries. While we serve Black and Brown families searching for their ancestors, we welcome people from all backgrounds to join us in documenting and protecting these sacred spaces. Our goal is to foster community, promote equity, and ensure that the legacies buried in these cemeteries are remembered, respected, and accessible to all.
